Vitamin C is perhaps best known for its ability to minimize the symptoms and shorten the duration of colds and flu. Vitamin C stimulates the defence mechanism of white blood cells and promotes the formation of antibodies. Between 1000mg and 6000mg per day should be taken at the first sign of cold symptoms.Vitamin C is also well known for its role as an antioxidant giving protection against some forms of cancer and heart disease. As the body's primary water-soluble antioxidant it scavenges unstable oxygen molecules called free radicals that would otherwise harm the cells of the body. It captures the unstable oxygen from the free radical and binds into its own molecule thereby making the free radical molecule harmless. It is especially important that smokers ensure they get sufficient vitamin C due to the large number of free radicals introduced into their body when smoking.
Vitamin C strengthens capillaries and cell walls, thus preventing bruising and promoting healing. It is required for the synthesis of collagen, the intercellular "cement" which holds tissues together. Collagen is vital to strengthen the gums, tendons and ligaments. Vitamin C helps in the production of haemoglobin in red blood cells and helps the body to absorb iron from food.
Vitamin C also plays an important role in overcoming stress. Vitamin C is used up in body's protective response to stress. Therefore it is essential that people in stressful situations or stressful jobs take enough vitamin C to ensure their body can cope and their immune system remains strong.
Studies have also found that taking vitamin C over a long period can protect against cataracts, that it can help elderly people fight off severe respiratory infections and can even act as a natural antihistamine for people with allergies to substances such as pollen and pet hair.
Many studies have also found a role for vitamin C in preventing or reducing asthmatic symptoms.
Supplementation with between 1000mg and 3000mg a day may prevent complications such as eye problems and high cholesterol levels in patients with type 1 diabetes. This disease interferes with the ability to transport vitamin C into the body's cells.
Recent findings show that doses as low as 500mg per day of vitamin C may help prevent the reblockage of arteries after angioplasty.
Vitamin C also assists with detoxification within the liver for example after taking drugs.
