Ginkgo Biloba is derived from the leaves of the ginkgo biloba tree. This tree has survived in China for over 200 million years making it one of the oldest species of tree on earth !Always ensure that you buy a ginkgo biloba as a standardized extract as this is far more potent.
Ginkgo Biloba: Main Benefits
Ginkgo biloba increases blood flow by controlling the tone and elasticity of blood vessels. It also reduces the 'stickiness' of blood, promotes the delivery of additional oxygen and glucose to nerve cells and acts as an antioxidant helping maintain healthy blood cells.
Most interest in ginkgo biloba centres on its potential for preventing age-related memory loss. So far its most pronounced effects are noticed where there is a condition leading to reduced blood flow to the brain. This may happen to elderly people where their arteries have been narrowed by cholesterol build-up or other conditions.
Reduced blood supply to the brain has been linked to Alzheimer's disease, memory loss, depression, anxiety, dizziness and tinnitus. These may all be helped by ginkgo biloba.
There is much interest in whether ginkgo biloba will turn out to be a general 'smart' pill for everyone. There are indications that gingko can increase concentration and memory in perfectly healthy people.
Ginkgo Biloba: Lesser-Known Benefits
Ginkgo also improves blood flow to the arms and legs making it useful for reducing pain in the condition 'intermittent claudication' where pain and cramping is caused by narrowed arteries. It can also alleviate coldness in the hands and feet, a symptom of Raynaud's disease. Some research suggests that by increasing blood flow to the nerve fibres of the eyes ginkgo can help treat macular degeneration and eye problems associated with diabetes.
By improving blood supply ginkgo may help treat male impotence by restoring erections.
Current research is investigating whether ginkgo's ability to prevent blood clots may help prevent heart attacks and strokes.
